Rhinoplasty, also called nose reshaping or a “nose job”, can correct cosmetic issues, as well as injuries. Besides improving the look of your nose, the surgery can improve your breathing as well. A nasal surgery to correct or repair issues related to breathing is called functional rhinoplasty.

Your nose is an important central feature on your face, but not one that you want to call attention to itself. You simply want your nose to be in harmonious proportion to your other features.

Dr. Steve Montante has had many years of experience performing rhinoplasty in Richmond. This facial plastic surgery is highly customized based on your anatomy and goals, so he may use a variety of techniques to provide you with an optimal result. He always pays attention to the function of your nose, as well as the aesthetics. Some people combine nose surgeries with other cosmetic procedures, such as an eyelid lift, brow lift, or facelift.

What Can Rhinoplasty Do for You?

  • Reshape the nose so that it is in better proportion with the rest of your face
  • Reduce a nose you deem too large
  • Smooth a bump on the bridge of the nose
  • Reduce or augment the nose tip
  • Correct a hooked nose
  • Improve nostril size
  • Correct obstructed nasal airways, such as a deviated septum
  • Widen the airways for better air flow

Dr. Montante will spend time with you during your initial consultation to hear your concerns and goals, as well as answer your questions. VECTRA 3D Imaging will allow you to “try on” different nose shapes and sizes to determine which you prefer.

Dr. Montante will also examine your nose and recommend a surgical plan for you. He will review your medical history to determine if you have any conditions related to breathing that can be corrected during your surgery. If your breathing is obstructed, that portion of your surgery may be covered by insurance. You may need to see a physician who can perform specific tests to satisfy your insurance company’s requirements, however. Note, however, that rhinoplasty is not recommended for children under age 13. Dr. Montante will advise you of all preparations to take prior to your rhinoplasty in Richmond. If you are a smoker, for example, you will need to stop for a period of time before surgery.

What Should you Expect from a Nose Job?

Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis in our Richmond office using general anesthesia in most cases. The surgery takes approximately 2-3 hours. There are two main types of rhinoplasty: open and closed. Open rhinoplasty involves an incision along the bottom of the nose across the columella, which is the skin that separates the nostrils. Closed rhinoplasty is done without this incision. In most cases, open rhinoplasty is necessary because it gives Dr. Montante full access to the internal structure of the nose.

Cartilage and bone may have to be removed in order to reshape the nose. If tissue needs to be built up rather than removed, cartilage may be removed from the inner structure of the nose and grafted in the area that needs more tissue. In rare cases, cartilage from the ear may be harvested.

After your surgery, your nose will be dressed, and a nasal splint may be necessary for a period of time to support the new structure during the healing process. In some cases, an external nasal cast or packing of the nostrils is required for a short time.

Recovery for Rhinoplasty in Richmond

Sutures across the columella will be removed in about a week. Over time, the scar will fade and flatten. Since it is under the nose, it is largely hidden. You should be able to resume normal activities, including work or school, within a week. The final results of your surgery may take as long as a year to be visible, but you will see significant improvement almost immediately. Physical exercise, especially anything that might lead to your nose being struck, should be avoided for several weeks to months.

Expect to feel some post-operative discomfort, but this can be managed with oral pain medication. Some patients feel slightly numb at the tip of the nose. Swelling and mild bruising are normal, but swelling can be reduced with cold compresses and elevating your head during sleep. You will need to avoid sleeping on your side for a period of time as your nose heals.

The majority of our patients say that recovery from rhinoplasty is easier than they anticipated.
