Juvéderm® and Juvéderm® Voluma are non-surgical injectable treatments that can combat signs of aging. Our face and neck lose volume as we age, causing sagging of the skin and the appearance of lines and wrinkles. These injectables not only soften lines and wrinkles, but also subtly lift sagging skin. Dr. Montante has extensive with these injectables, allowing him to give you a natural, not overdone look.
Juvéderm® and Juvéderm® Voluma are both dermal fillers, also called facial fillers, which consist of hyaluronic acid. This acid is already present in the body, so the injections are very safe. Voluma is a bit thicker, which allows it to be injected into a deeper layer of the skin. As a result, it can lift sagging skin, correct hollowed areas, and serves as a support for the skin’s structure.
Both products are smooth gels that increase your skin’s moisture as they restore youthful volume. Juvéderm® can also be used for lip augmentation to make the lips fuller and poutier. While the results are not permanent, Juvéderm® injections from our office in Richmond can last up to a year, while Voluma can last as long as 2 years.
Some patients combine Juvéderm® treatment with BOTOX® to treat both types of wrinkles – those due to lost volume and those caused by muscle contractions.

Lip Augmentation
Changing the shape of the lips to restore volume, correct asymmetries, or prevent lipstick bleed from lip lines radiating around the mouth, can be achieved with dermal filler. Each patients’ lip anatomy is unique, and no two people can achieve the same outcome with injections. Whether you desire to increase the volume of a small upper lip, desire to raise the corners of the mouth, accentuate the philtrum ridges (extending from the nose down to the upper lips), correct an asymmetry, or restore volume, each procedure will be customized.
Lip Augmentation Treatment
During consultation the lips will be examined, photos will be taken and reviewed, then a treatment plan will be formulated. Topical anesthetic and ice are utilized to diminish any discomfort. It is not unusual for lips to swell during injection. For this reason, a small amount of filler may be saved to provide a “touch-up” once swelling has subsided. A two-week follow-up appointment will be made before you leave the office, to reevaluate your lips or use the remaining filler in your syringe.
Cheek/Mid-Face Augmentation
Juvéderm® Voluma XC has quickly become one of the most popular fillers requested. With aging, we lose bone density and fat in the mid-face region, leading to facial sagging. With Voluma Hylacross technology, and our advanced techniques performed only by Allergan trained injectors, volume and lift are restored to the mid-face, offsetting lower face jowls, marionette lines, and hollowed under eye regions. After injections, patients notice how light reflects better off the lifted cheeks, providing a more youthful, rested appearance. Voluma lasts up to two years with full correction.
Mid-Face Injection Philosophy
We believe that injecting dermal fillers to augment a patient’s facial appearance is both an honor and an art form. During treatment, every angle of the face is viewed, especially the oblique view versus only a person’s frontal view, to provide the best outcome. The traditional approach with fillers, and practiced by many less experienced injectors, is to “chase lines” and plump them up with filler. At Montante Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, we feel that the lines in the middle of the face are a symptom of problems occurring peripherally. Instead of filling in a marionette line, for example, the cause may be volume loss in the cheeks. The entire face, from all angles, is taken into consideration, as we aim for a more lateral projection and lift of the mid-face, helping to sharpen the jaw line. A lateral projection makes for a more youthful, aesthetically-pleasing appearance. Injectors that fill the mid -face anteriorly, only, achieve un-natural, and unflattering outcomes.
Filler Side Effects
The most common side effects are redness, tenderness, mild swelling, and bruising along the injection sites. Most side effects resolve in 3 to 5 days. Patients on aspirin or other non-steroidal (NSAIDS), prescription blood thinners (Coumadin, Heparin), fish oils, vitamin E, gingko biloba, ginseng, garlic supplements, or alcohol consumption in the past week are at greater risk of bleeding and subsequent bruising. Adverse events are rare due to the biocompatibility of the substance in the body. Should a more serious reaction occur, the filler can be dissolved with a special enzyme medication (Vitrase).
Am I a Candidate for Juvéderm®?
Dr. Montante will spend time with you during your initial consultation to hear your concerns and goals, as well as answer your questions. He will review your medical history and examine your face to determine if you are a good candidate for Juvéderm® and/or Voluma.
Individuals who are pregnant, nursing, or have an infection in the treatment area should not be treated. Those with a history of severe allergies manifested by a history of anaphylaxis; an allergy to gram positive bacterial proteins; or an allergy to lidocaine should not have treatment.
Both Juvéderm® and Juvéderm® Voluma contain Lidocaine, which helps to numb the skin and reduce discomfort. The needle is small, and the sting is slight. The treatment takes no more than a half hour.
Filler Pricing
Pricing will be determined at the time of your consultation. Each Juvéderm® XC product has slightly different characteristics such as the thickness, stabilization, and treatment area indications. With dermal filler, you pay for the price of each 1.0 ml Juvéderm® XC syringe of material. Depending on your anatomy and the outcome you wish to achieve, will determine the number of syringes.
Recovering from Juvéderm® Injections
You can return to work or other normal activities immediately after your injections. Avoid exercise for 2 days, however. Certain medications and dental work should also be avoided for about a month.
Some patients experience slight swelling, bruising, and discomfort for a few days after Juvéderm® injections. Any temporary discoloration can be covered with makeup or bronzer. The results will be visible as soon as the swelling resolves.
