Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck Richmond, VA

A Tummy Tuck (also called an abdominoplasty) may be the best option to achieve a flatter abdomen. No matter how much you diet or exercise, you may find that you carry extra abdominal skin and soft tissue that refuses to budge.

This surgery can address skin laxity and excess fat in the abdomen and love-handle areas, helping you to feel more confident and fit better in clothes. If you only have excess fat without  lax skin; however, Liposuction alone may be sufficient for you.

Dr. Steven Montante has performed countless successful tummy tucks for his patients in Richmond, Virginia, providing a dramatic improvement in patients with abdominal bulging due to weight loss or from previous pregnancy.

A tummy tuck is a common procedure included with a Mommy Makeover.

What can a Tummy Tuck do for you?

A tummy tuck can correct the following:

  • Loose abdominal skin
  • Love handles
  • Abdominal muscle stretching, separation, or weakness, which often happens after pregnancy

What will happen during your abdominoplasty consultation?

Dr. Montante will spend time with you during your initial consultation to hear your concerns and goals, as well as answer your questions. He will review your medical history, followed by a thorough physical exam with specific attention to your abdomen and trunk. This will allow him to recommend a surgical plan tailored specifically for you.

Dr. Montante will advise you of all preparations to take prior to your operation. If you are a smoker, for example, you will need to stop for a period of time before surgery.

What should you expect from a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is usually performed using general anesthesia and takes 2-4 hours. If you are having more than one surgical procedure at the same time, Dr. Montante recommends you spend a night in the hospital.

Incisions vary depending upon the amount of tissue that needs to be removed. In most cases, the incision is made across the lower pubic area from hip to hip. In some cases, excess fat is removed through Liposuction by inserting a tube called a cannula, which is then attached to a suction device that removes the fat.

Dr. Montante trims excess skin and also tightens the abdominal muscles, if necessary. The belly button is repositioned in cases in which laxity extends to the upper abdomen.

If you have only a small amount of loose skin in the lower abdomen with no separated muscles, a mini-tummy tuck may be an option. In this case, excess skin can be removed through a limited incision, resulting in a shorter scar and a faster recovery.

After your surgery, the incisions are sutured and dressed. Some patients may have drains placed in the incisions to catch post-surgical fluids. The sutures typically dissolve on their own,  and the drains are removed in one of your post-surgical visits, usually within a few days to a week.

Recovering from a Tummy Tuck

You will wear a compression garment for a few weeks after your tummy tuck, and you will feel most comfortable sleeping on your back for at least a couple of weeks.

You should be able to return to work and resume normal activities after approximately 2 weeks, as long as your work does not involve strenuous activity or lifting. You should avoid strenuous exercise for about 4 weeks.

Expect to feel some post-operative discomfort, but this can be managed with oral pain medication. Some bruising and swelling are normal. Swelling will take the longest to resolve, so while your stomach will be flatter immediately, you won’t be able to see the final results of your surgery until all of the swelling has resolved. This can take up to 6 months.

There are visible scars after a tummy tuck, but they will be low enough on the abdomen that they are concealed by most undergarments and bikini bottoms. Also, over time, the scars will become flatter, smoother, lighter, and less prominent.

Dr. Montante will monitor your progress carefully in follow-up examinations.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

While many patients benefit from muscle repair, it is not always necessary. If your abdominals were stretched significantly because of pregnancy or significant weight gain, Dr. Montante might recommend muscle repair as part of your tummy tuck.

We highly recommend that you do not liposuction your abdominals during a tummy tuck because it will increase trauma to your skin and tissues, which will have a difficult time healing.

Although a tummy tuck does a fantastic job removing skin, fat, and tissues, it does not guarantee that your abs will show. It will provide you with a more contoured appearance than you had before.

A tummy tuck is not meant to be a weight loss surgery. Patients who have already lost weight enjoy this surgery because it removes excess tissues that are left over.

Hernias can be repaired at the same time as your abdominoplasty, depending on their extent and severity. That said, Dr. Montante will have to determine if hernia repair will be a safe and effective option to pair with your tummy tuck procedure.

The best ways to prepare yourself are to maintain a healthy weight, have realistic expectations of what the surgery can do, and eat healthily. You should also avoid blood thinners, herbal medications, aspirin, alcohol, and smoking before, during, and after your procedure.

The whole procedure will take roughly 2 to 4 hours.

If necessary, Dr. Montante may place small, thin drainage tubes to drain any excess fluid and swelling after surgery. We will remove these within 3 to 5 days, at your first post-op visit. We will provide you with a list of instructions on how to manage your drains properly.

The scar’s size will depend on the extent of your tummy tuck procedure. Dr. Montante will do his best to conceal your scar, which will fade significantly over time.

Dr. Montante can use dissolvable sutures, which means that you will not have to have any stitches removed. If he uses traditional sutures, he will remove them in your follow-up appointment in an easy, painless way.

Each person will recover differently from a tummy tuck, so it is hard to say precisely how long your recovery will take. Generally, patients are able to return to work between 2 to 6 weeks. If your job is more strenuous, you will want to wait until you are fully recovered to resume full activity.

A tummy tuck with Dr. Montante offers a slimmer profile, a flatter abdominal area, and tighter skin and tissues around the midsection.

Swelling after your procedure can last between two to three months. It will gradually dissipate as your body begins to heal, after which you’ll be able to see your amazing results.

While we understand that life happens, we advise that you avoid getting pregnant for at least six months after your surgery. Doing so will help ensure that you have adequately recovered. If you do get pregnant after a tummy tuck, you may need to have another procedure.

Because of the severity of tummy tuck surgery, it usually takes about 8 weeks to fully recover from the surgery. Your body needs time to heal properly, but after your recovery you will be back to your normal self with all the benefits of the procedure.

The most common risks are persistent pain, infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, scarring, numbness, and asymmetry. Dr. Montante is an expert who is well aware of the risks of a tummy tuck. He guarantees that he will take every necessary precaution within his power to prevent any complications.

You will need to let your body heal for up to 12 weeks before you can begin core exercises such as sit-ups, crunches, or anything else that demands core activation. Dr. Montante will recommend other exercise options for you to consider that do not involve your abdominal muscles.

As a safety precaution, we advise that you do not physically pick up your child for at least a week after surgery. This may be longer, depending on how well you are healing and your circumstances. Dr. Montante and our team are happy to answer any questions.

It is typical for your abdominals to feel very tight after surgery. We advocate that you move slowly and bent over for the first week to keep tension off of your suture lines. Dr. Montante will provide you with a comprehensive list of instructions that will help guide your through the healing process.

If you become pregnant shortly after an abdominoplasty, the procedure will not interfere with your ability to deliver the baby safely at all. We do advocate that you try to wait at least six months to ensure that your results heal properly.

Depending on the extent of your tummy tuck, Dr. Montante may reposition your belly button. Whereas a full tummy tuck involves work above the belly button, a mini tummy tuck focuses below your belly button line. If he does reposition your belly button, Dr. Montante will make it look entirely natural.

Dr. Montante will carefully recreate the natural appearance of your belly button by using your original umbilical stalk. This guarantees that your belly button will be in the correct spot and appear natural.
